- Design that strives to merge the dynamic information prevalent in the digital world with objects that exist in the physical world.
- “We live between two worlds: Our physical environment and digital space. The tangible media group at the MIT Media lab focus on the seamless couplings between physicality and virtuality”.
Some of you might ask- Why is this interesting?
The short answer is that we all know that the current GUI interaction model is stagnating. We have been using the same model (with minor additions and improvements) for about 30 years now (see the wonderful Douglas Engelbart Demo from 1968 here – you will need Real player).
If computing technology is to make a leap into true ubiquity, we will need new UI models to enable it.
Tangible media, or Tangible UI is one direction of research which might hold some promise in this process.
