Smart Stuff

This discussion group, from my point of view, will NOT deal with AI, but rather with the question of

How to make everyday objects seem "smart"

Now that is the question, isn't it- what forms of stimulus- response models make an object seem smart to the person interacting with it? Will just being able to know your identity make it seem smart? Will knowing your location make it seem smart? What about heart rate - or do we need more abstract forms of input- i.e. , affect, mood, etc?

Topics for discussion: (Please add)

  • What computational Intelligence is needed to make everyday physical objects seem "Smart"?
  • Is just adding input, some processing and communications enough?
  • Do adding these qualities to an object make it smart? Do they make it useful? Or do they make it a pain in the butt? Why?
  • How much of the situational context should the object take into consideration when making decisions?
  • Developing a taxonomy for “Object” Smartness
